Bah, humbug After dealing with an unpleasant and hurtful situation, I'm feeling rather "bah, humbug" about fandom holiday festivities right now (nothing to do with Snupin Santa, btw), and I don't know how to rekindle my enthusiasm. I think what I need to do is take a few days off from HP, focus on my Yuletide story, knit up a storm, watch holiday movies, and bake cookies. The good news is that I've almost wrapped up the semester. It's only "almost" because of course someone forgot to attach their exam material to the email they sent me and is now pitching a fit because they're getting a late penalty despite the fact that I sent them two emails since Friday prodding them to get the material to me asap so they wouldn't get a zero. This really hasn't been my month. If things don't turn around, I'm going to be a full-fledged Grinch by Christmas Eve. Hmm. Amazing superpower, or beneficiary of serendipity? Heh, yesterday, in a locked post (locked because it was mostly about other kinds of content), I said something to the effect that we were now in the annual period of impatience, in which we wait for fic both by and for self to post at various fests. This morning, fic for me is up at both Happy Trekmas [ here] and Smutty Claus [ here is the fic; the Smutty_Claus post at LJ is here]. Either I have a superpower (in which case, I probably should use it more directly for good rather than for making the world eject fic for me), or I am the beneficiary of entertaining serendipity. :D I originally posted this at http://florahart.dreamwidth.org/1013199.html, and you are welcome to comment there. I regret nothing. Last night I picked up pasta for dinner from the cafe around the corner, and instead of working on our finals, J and I watched 5 episodes of White Collar. In our defense, we were both too exhausted from work to do anything productive. Also in our defense, we are addicted. We will be saving the last ep for /after/ finals. I... I'm probably going to need icons. :x Current Mood: busy |

Super-late holiday cards? I have had a stupid day. Stupid week, actually. Some of the factors have been household drama, broken things, and a lot of medicine with not nearly enough sleep. I believe this calls for a round of increasing general cheer. So. Drabbled*-within cards, anyone? No particular reciprocity expected, required, or anticipated. I will need a character and a prompt (HP or Trek Reboot or original if you wanna see what my cracked head comes up with), and I tend to like prompts that are single words or short phrases, though a couple single words is fine and if you MUST use a quote, just know I am at least as likely to take it out of context as in. ;) And obviously I will need an address and a handle I can write on the envelope that will both get to you and not freak anyone out. I have some cards that are Christmas-specific, and some that are non-denominational; if this is critical to you, please to note. I make no promise whatsoever that I will get them mailed by Friday, so they are likely, at least some of them, to be late. Late December or January cheer is good, too, right? Right! *nods* Onward, then. Comments are screened (and clearly I can't answer any of them as that would unscreen them). Just in this case, I am disabling comments on the other sites so as to put all the comments in one place. If I get *horribly* overwhelmed, I will note accordingly. But, I mean, hey, cards will go on sale in a couple of weeks, and FEBRUARY cheer is ALSO good. *If I'm hand-writing, it's likely I will not do exactly 100 words. I mean, I might, but just saying. You might get a limerick. Or a bunch of haiku. Or a word puzzle, for all I know. I originally posted this at http://florahart.dreamwidth.org/1011674.html, and am directing you there to put the comments all in one place. OpenID and/or anon comments are allowed. |

counting down is making me crazy I'm ridiculously behind on my lighting final. I'd been struggling with a specific hurdle, and I got past that this last weekend, but since I was working so hard on figuring out wtf my problem was in only that one area, I'm now behind on all the other parts. Oops. I console myself with the fact that it's not part of my major, I just wanted to know how to do it and now I do, so I'm good so long as I pass. My modeling finals, while running into a few issues that are mostly hardware related are going fairly peachy. I'm not going to get them as polished as I'd like, but considering that I was spreading my time between four classes and work, I'm pretty damn happy with what I've come up with. Wednesday... zomg. Wednesday and I'll be done for six weeks with mostly online classes in the upcoming semester. I might be working full time, but omg that I can handle. This semester has been one long steady crush of too much to freaking do. I'm mostly caught up on all my CSI TV at least (we shall not speak of SPN). J and I are one episode of Fringe behind, but we might be able to sit down for that tonight. And now I have sipped at my tea and my fingers are warm and I should get back to rendering. Cue flaily arms. Current Mood: rushed |

ok I watched a bit of Top Gear in America special....
How did the producers think that painting up those cars and setting them loose in hicksville would not result in danger? I'm honestly surprised no one was hurt.
However the Vietnam special... the sight of Clarkson in misery is joyful. Richard and James are very cute together <3.
I need to watch them both all the way through but the bits I've snagged have been fun. Except for the roadkill. ew.
(and James looks so elegant, even on a bike. His legs are a mile long... *thud*) |

Well now, apparently, because I don't like the OTW and am displeased with the yuletide move, I hate Astolat.Whisky Tango Foxtrot. Pardon but I've been doing yuletide since the first, long before this OTW stupidity. I know what the yuletide mods go through and what work they have to do. I'm happy for them that they have found something to lighten their burden. I'm not happy with what they've chosen. So since when did not agreeing someone's decision to do something equal hating them? Is this what general LJ fandom has become, a bunch of convert or die types? I wasn't aware that I was no longer allowed to disagree with what other people do that affect me. I agreed to allow yuletide to have my work, not the a03 archive. Man, for all several people go on about permissions and specifying where and how their own work can be archived, it seems they don't think that same courtesy should be extended to other people. I'd like to hear the screaming if one of their fandom archives decided to move to some unfinished forum based platform run by some bunch that wants to study the contents for marketing research and needs content to swell its ranks. I'm still boggled at the total state of unfinishedness of a03. Some parts yuletide will be using aren't even finished being coded yet... @.@ What's the date? When's the stress testing going to happen? Then they have to get 1500 ish people signed on, situated and in working order... Mad props if they can but my cynicism, let me show you it. I do coding for a living and maybe that's why I'm all @.@ at this schedule. For their sakes I hope it isn't a mongolian clusterfuck. |

well I left a comment on my displeasure at having to use Ao3 hereNo, I do not wish to orphan my works. I want my name attached to them. I don't want them on that archive _at all_ While they might be entitled to whatever current one I do because it was clearly spelled out (even though I completely missed it until too late) that it was going to ao3; I did not in any way agree to my old things being sent there. Not just me, I'm sure there are plenty of other people. They didn't agree to give their stuff to anyone but yuletidetreasure.org. humbug. |

Misc. So the v-gift snowflakes being free was a glitch, not a nice show of holiday generosity by LJ. Huh. Color me unsurprised. In other news, I've graded around 40 papers in 3 days. I have 4 final papers, 3 late papers, and a batch of journals from my lit course remaining. Then I get a mini-break until the final exam material starts coming in. Huzzah! I went to the dentist this morning, and all was well; no cavities or other oral issues. Huzzah again! I stopped at Michael's (a chain craft store in the US) afterward and picked up some double-pointed needles and a three pack of cookie decorating stuff in green, red, and white, so I think that means I've committed myself to making either gingerbread cookies or sugar cookies once I'm on break. Okay, back to work! I won't get finished unless I keep plodding along. This entry was originally posted at http://scribbulus-ink.dreamwidth.org/520334.html. Still Lurking About I had the most lovely surprise in my in-box today. Several thoughtful and generous friends sent me some virtual gifts. I can't tell you how touched I was by that. And how very surprised.
Know that I think of you all often. Nearly daily, truth be told. I still write stories in my head; I just can't seem to get them down on paper – how sad is that. One day, soon, I'll give you all a more detailed update, one that better chronicles my ups and down of the last year. It’s been…interesting.
Happy holidays to all.
With love,

Interestingly BBC-A is hacking the crap out of Top Gear.
Strangely it makes it a shade more Gay and Clarkson a shade more PC...

Break Time I made Spiced Tea over the weekend, and today, I took a break from grading long enough to put together some Peanut-butter Pumpkin bread, which is warm out of the oven and goes perfectly with spiced tea. Snowflakes I think it's very nice that Livejournal is offering a free virtual gift, and I've even sent a couple of snowflakes myself. I'm also amused that snowflake mania appears to have taken over my flist, but I'm still not tempted to enable virtual gifts for my journal. Sorry about that! Meanwhile, I've been pushing exceptionally hard to finish grading the last set of papers for my comp classes so I can have a tiny respite before final exam material starts coming in later this week, and if I see one more comma error, I may well scream. chocolate chip and bacon cookies If I hadn't tried chocolate-covered bacon at the state fair and really liked it, I would have been dubious about this article and the accompanying recipes, but tonight, I made the chocolate chip and bacon cookies, and I really like them! You don't taste bacon per se, just a nice saltiness that complements the sweetness of the cookie; I like this combination, and I'm probably going to try some of the other recipes sooner or later. Oh good grief. Do you know what is super wrong with my response to this item from regretsy? Go look; I'll wait. It's that when I glanced at it, after observing the title "This is how we love," the silhouette I saw was Jar-Jar Binks on the right, and my immediate problem with this as a representation of love was that Padme's hair is never all stringy like that, and Anakin's is never long enough to be like that. BRAIN. WHAT THE. I originally posted this at http://florahart.dreamwidth.org/1008752.html. Comments may be left here or there; you can comment there with OpenID even if you don't have an account. |
